A Special Edition Tribute – MGA Times, September 2023

This special edition of the MGA Times pays tribute to three long-serving and highly respected contributors to the Maize Growers Association: John Morgan, Simon Draper, and Oli Knowland. After decades of dedicated service, each has stepped down from their official roles, marking the end of an era and a moment of reflection for the organisation.

John Morgan, through his leadership of Creedy Associates, has been at the heart of the MGA for over 30 years. He helped shape the association into the robust, farmer-focused research body it is today—driving its growth, modernising its resources, and ensuring it stayed relevant to both growers and policy discussions. Although stepping away from day-to-day responsibilities, John will continue contributing as a valued MGA council member.

Simon Draper, known widely in UK and European maize circles, is also retiring from the MGA council after more than 35 years of involvement, including over three decades as MGA Agronomist. A pioneering figure, Simon was known for his forward-thinking approach to maize agronomy, developing essential tools like the variety selector and nitrogen predictor. His presence at conferences and in the field inspired many farmers and researchers alike.

Oli Knowland, stepping down after ten years on the council, has played a key role in supporting and energising the MGA’s trials programme. His input helped maintain the MGA’s position at the cutting edge of maize research.

Together, John, Simon and Oli have been foundational to the MGA’s success. This edition honours their contributions with messages of thanks and warm wishes for their futures.
