Maize Silage 2024 Results – Key Findings and Advice
- Jan 3, 2025
- 1 min read
This report by Christine Pedersen, MGA Ruminant Nutrition Advisor, reviews the initial 2024 maize silage analysis. A wet spring and cool summer delayed drilling, resulting in an average dry matter of 32.2%, lower than 2023 but within the target range. Results show slightly higher energy and starch levels than last year, though still below 2022 levels.
Analysis reveals significant variability across farms, with dry matter ranging from 25–35% and a strong link between starch and metabolisable energy. Lower dry matter crops can increase the risk of sub-acute ruminal acidosis (SARA), especially as starch becomes more degradable in storage.
The guide emphasises regular silage sampling and correct techniques to ensure accurate nutrient analysis. It also includes tips on clamp management to reduce aerobic spoilage and advice on using 2024 results to plan for 2025 crops.
